Since 1987, KMG has produced its wood treating chemical, Pentachlorophenol (Penta), in Matamoros. KMG is the only manufacturer of Penta in the world. Built by KMG on 13 acres of purchased farmland, the plant lies outside the city of Matamoros. The plant’s footprint is fully covered in concrete, and rainwater that falls on the facility is collected, treated and used on site. Hydrochloric acid is a natural byproduct of the synthesis of Penta. KMG produces a commercial grade of this acid on site, fully consuming the recycled rainwater which is sold to local industrial customers. The process uses very little energy and produces virtually no effluents. KMG employs over 50 people at its Matamoros facility and has been an important member of the Matamoros community for over a quarter of a century.
KMG has operated the two-acre Tuscaloosa, Alabama facility since the company was founded in 1985. The Tuscaloosa plant formulates Penta produced in Matamoros into a liquid concentrate, which KMG distributes by truck to its customers who treat wooden utility poles for sale across the United States and Canada. Tuscaloosa is strategically located near the geographic center of KMG’s main customer base for this important wood treating product.
